Linkwood distillery
Linkwood Distillery is a renowned Scotch whisky distillery located in Elgin, Moray, Scotland. Established in 1821 by Peter Brown, the distillery has a long history of producing high-quality single malt whisky. It is currently owned by Diageo, a global leader in beverage alcohol.
History
Linkwood Distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown. The distillery remained under the Brown family's ownership until 1868, when it was sold to William Brown, who was not related to the original founder. In 1872, the distillery underwent significant renovations and expansions under the management of William Brown.
In 1933, the distillery was acquired by Scottish Malt Distillers, which later became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). In 1987, DCL merged with Guinness to form United Distillers, which eventually became part of Diageo in 1997.
Production
Linkwood Distillery is known for its traditional production methods. The distillery uses a combination of malted barley, yeast, and water sourced from the nearby Millbuies Loch. The distillation process takes place in copper pot stills, which are essential for creating the distillery's distinctive flavor profile.
The distillery operates six stills: three wash stills and three spirit stills. The whisky is aged in a variety of cask types, including American oak and European oak casks, which contribute to the complexity and depth of the final product.
Products
Linkwood Distillery primarily produces single malt whisky, which is highly regarded for its light, floral, and fruity character. The distillery's core range includes:
- Linkwood 12 Year Old
- Linkwood 15 Year Old
- Linkwood 18 Year Old
In addition to its core range, Linkwood whisky is also used in various blended whiskies produced by Diageo, such as Johnnie Walker and White Horse.
Visitor Experience
Linkwood Distillery is not open to the public for tours, but its whiskies can be found in specialist whisky shops and online retailers. The distillery's picturesque location and historic buildings make it a point of interest for whisky enthusiasts and historians alike.
