Life force (pronunciation: /ˈlaɪf fɔːrs/), also known as vital energy, is a concept that refers to a form of energy, spirit, or living spark which is said to animate living beings.

Etymology

The term "life force" is derived from the English words "life" meaning the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, and "force" meaning strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement. The concept of life force is found in many cultures under different names, such as "qi" in Chinese philosophy, "prana" in Indian philosophy, and "ki" in Japanese philosophy.
