Leonardo DiCaprio
American actor and film producer
Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio (born November 11, 1974) is an American actor and film producer. Known for his work in biographical and period films, DiCaprio is the recipient of numerous accolades, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. As of 2019, his films have grossed over $7.2 billion worldwide, and he has been placed eight times in annual rankings of the world's highest-paid actors.
Early life
DiCaprio was born in Los Angeles, California. He is the only child of Irmelin Indenbirken, a legal secretary, and George DiCaprio, an underground comix writer, publisher, and distributor of comic books. He was named Leonardo because his pregnant mother was looking at a Leonardo da Vinci painting in a museum in Italy when he first kicked. DiCaprio was raised in a bohemian environment in Los Angeles.
Career
Early work and breakthrough (1989–1996)
DiCaprio began his career by appearing in television commercials in the late 1980s. He had recurring roles in various television series, including Santa Barbara and Growing Pains. His film debut came in 1991 with a role in the low-budget horror film Critters 3. He gained public recognition with his role in This Boy's Life (1993) and received critical acclaim for his supporting role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), earning his first Academy Award nomination.
Stardom with Titanic and continued success (1997–2001)
DiCaprio achieved international fame as a star in James Cameron's epic romance Titanic (1997). The film became the highest-grossing film at the time and earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Following Titanic, DiCaprio starred in a series of successful films, including The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) and The Beach (2000).
Continued critical acclaim (2002–2012)
In the 2000s, DiCaprio collaborated with director Martin Scorsese on several projects, including Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), and Shutter Island (2010). He received critical acclaim and numerous awards for his performances, particularly for The Aviator, for which he won a Golden Globe Award.
Recent work and environmental activism (2013–present)
DiCaprio's portrayal of Jordan Belfort in The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) earned him another Golden Globe Award. He won his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Revenant (2015). DiCaprio is also known for his environmental activism, having established the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998, which focuses on global warming, preserving Earth's biodiversity, and supporting renewable energy.
