King Kullen is a supermarket chain based in Long Island, New York. It is recognized as America's first supermarket, a title it claims based on its pioneering self-service, low-price, high-volume retail model. The company was founded by Michael J. Cullen in 1930.

History

King Kullen was established on August 4, 1930, by Michael J. Cullen, a former employee of Kroger and A&P. Cullen's innovative idea was to create a large, self-service grocery store with a wide variety of products at low prices, which was a departure from the traditional small, service-oriented grocery stores of the time. The first store was opened in a vacant garage in Jamaica, Queens.

Growth and Expansion

The success of the first King Kullen store led to rapid expansion. By the mid-1930s, King Kullen had opened several more stores across New York City and Long Island. The chain continued to grow throughout the 20th century, adapting to changes in the retail landscape and consumer preferences.

Store Features

King Kullen stores are known for their wide selection of products, including fresh produce, meats, dairy, bakery items, and household goods. Many locations also feature additional services such as pharmacies, floral departments, and delicatessens.

Community Involvement

King Kullen is actively involved in the communities it serves. The company supports various local charities and organizations, including food banks, schools, and health initiatives. King Kullen also promotes sustainability through recycling programs and efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
