John Wesley Davis (April 16, 1799 – August 22, 1859) was an American physician and politician who served as the 22nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1845 to 1847. He was a member of the Democratic Party and represented Indiana in the United States House of Representatives.

Early life and education

John Wesley Davis was born on April 16, 1799, in New Holland, Pennsylvania. He studied medicine and became a practicing physician before entering politics.

Political career

Davis was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1835, representing Indiana's 2nd district. He served from March 4, 1837, to March 3, 1839. After a brief hiatus, he was re-elected to the House in 1843, this time representing Indiana's 7th district, and served until 1847.

During his tenure in Congress, Davis was elected as the 22nd Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, serving from December 1, 1845, to March 4, 1847. As Speaker, he presided over the House during the Mexican-American War and was involved in significant legislative decisions of the time.

Later career and death

After leaving Congress, Davis continued to be active in politics and public service. He was appointed as the Governor of the Oregon Territory by President James K. Polk and served from 1853 to 1854. He later returned to Indiana, where he resumed his medical practice.

John Wesley Davis died on August 22, 1859, in Carlisle, Indiana.
