Jawar Mohammed
Jawar Mohammed is an Ethiopian political analyst, activist, and media entrepreneur. He is known for his significant influence in Ethiopian politics, particularly in the Oromo community. Jawar is the founder of the Oromia Media Network (OMN), which has played a crucial role in the dissemination of information and mobilization of the Oromo people.
Early Life and Education
Jawar Mohammed was born in Ethiopia in 1986. He belongs to the Oromo people, the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia. Jawar pursued his higher education in the United States, where he attended Stanford University and later Columbia University, earning degrees in political science and human rights.
Activism
Jawar Mohammed emerged as a prominent figure during the Oromo protests that began in 2014. These protests were against the Ethiopian government's plan to expand the capital, Addis Ababa, into the surrounding Oromia region, which many Oromos saw as a threat to their land and rights. Jawar's role in these protests was pivotal, as he used social media and the Oromia Media Network to organize and inform the Oromo people.
Oromia Media Network
In 2013, Jawar founded the Oromia Media Network (OMN), a satellite television station that broadcasts in the Oromo language. OMN has been instrumental in providing a platform for Oromo voices and issues, which were often marginalized in the mainstream Ethiopian media. The network has faced numerous challenges, including government crackdowns and accusations of inciting violence.
Political Influence
Jawar Mohammed's influence extends beyond media and activism. He has been a vocal critic of the Ethiopian government and has advocated for the rights of the Oromo people. In 2019, he returned to Ethiopia from the United States, signaling a new phase in his political involvement. His return was seen as a significant moment in Ethiopian politics, as it coincided with a period of political reform under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
Arrest and Legal Issues
In June 2020, Jawar Mohammed was arrested following the assassination of the popular Oromo singer Hachalu Hundessa. His arrest led to widespread protests and violence, resulting in numerous deaths and arrests. Jawar and several other opposition figures were charged with terrorism and other crimes, which they and their supporters have denied, claiming the charges are politically motivated.
Personal Life
Jawar Mohammed is married and has children. He continues to be a prominent figure in Ethiopian politics and the Oromo community, advocating for democracy, human rights, and the rights of the Oromo people.
