Jammie Dodgers

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Jammie Dodgers are a popular British biscuit, made from shortbread with a raspberry or strawberry flavoured jam filling. They are currently produced by Burton's Biscuit Company, a company that has a history dating back to the early 19th century.

History

Jammie Dodgers have been produced since the 1960s. The biscuit was originally named after the character Roger the Dodger from The Beano, a British children's comic. The name 'Jammie Dodgers' refers to the jam that is 'dodged' between two layers of biscuit.

Production

Jammie Dodgers are made by sandwiching a layer of jam between two shortbread biscuits. The top biscuit has a heart-shaped hole in the centre, allowing the jam to be seen. The biscuits are then baked until golden brown. The jam used in Jammie Dodgers is typically raspberry or strawberry flavoured, although other flavours have been used in limited edition versions of the biscuit.

Varieties

Over the years, several different varieties of Jammie Dodgers have been produced. These include 'Toffee Dodgers', 'Choccie Dodgers', and 'Jammie Bakes'. In 2011, a limited edition 'Red Nose Day' version of the biscuit was produced, with red jam instead of the usual raspberry or strawberry.

Cultural Impact

Jammie Dodgers have a significant cultural impact in the UK. They are often associated with childhood and nostalgia, and are a staple in many British households. The biscuits have also been referenced in various forms of media, including television shows such as Doctor Who, where they are a favourite snack of the Eleventh Doctor.
