Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan (born Chan Kong-sang on 7 April 1954) is a Hong Kongese martial artist, actor, film director, producer, stuntman, and singer. He is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts, which he typically performs himself. Chan has been acting since the 1960s and has appeared in over 150 films. He is one of the most recognizable and influential cinematic personalities in the world, gaining a widespread following in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and has received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars.
Early Life
Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-sang on 7 April 1954 in British Hong Kong as the son of refugees from the Chinese Civil War. With no money for doctor's fees, his parents were almost forced to adopt him out to the British doctor who delivered him. Chan attended the Nah-Hwa Primary School on Hong Kong Island, where he failed his first year, after which his parents withdrew him from the school. At the age of seven, he was sent to the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera School run by Master Yu Jim-yuen. Chan trained rigorously for the next decade, excelling in martial arts and acrobatics.
Career
Chan began his career as an extra child actor in the 1962 film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar. He continued to appear in small roles before his first major breakthrough in 1978 with the film Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, followed by Drunken Master, which helped establish the comedic kung fu genre. Chan's first Hollywood film was The Big Brawl in 1980. However, it was not until the 1995 film Rumble in the Bronx that he achieved significant fame in the West. This success led to roles in other Hollywood movies such as the Rush Hour series, Shanghai Noon, and The Tuxedo.
Chan has also worked as a director, producing films through his company, Jackie Chan Stunt Team, and singing in various soundtracks of his films. His work has earned him multiple awards, including an Academy Award for his lifetime achievement in film.
Personal Life
Chan is known for his philanthropic efforts, founding the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation, which among other deeds, offers scholarships and medical services to young people in Hong Kong. He has been married to Joan Lin since 1982, and they have a son, Jaycee Chan, who is also an actor and singer.
Legacy
Jackie Chan's influence on cinema is vast, with a career that spans over five decades. He is known for his dedication to his craft, performing most of his own stunts, which has led to numerous injuries. His blend of martial arts with slapstick comedy has created a highly entertaining style that has been emulated by many. Chan's legacy is not only in his films but also in his contribution to charity and the promotion of Chinese culture globally.
