Iron Man is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character was co-created by writer and editor Stan Lee, developed by scripter Larry Lieber, and designed by artists Don Heck and Jack Kirby. The character made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39 (cover dated March 1963).

Character Biography[edit]

Iron Man's alter ego is Tony Stark, a wealthy industrialist and genius inventor. Stark suffers a severe chest injury during a kidnapping in which his captors attempt to force him to build a weapon of mass destruction. Instead, he creates a powered suit of armor to save his life and escape captivity. Later, Stark augments his suit with weapons and other technological devices he designed through his company, Stark Industries. He uses the suit and successive versions to protect the world as Iron Man.

Powers and Abilities[edit]

Iron Man possesses powered armor that gives him superhuman strength and durability, flight, and an array of weapons. The armor is invented and worn by Tony Stark, who is constantly upgrading and improving its technology. Stark's intelligence and expertise in engineering and computer science are also significant assets.

Supporting Characters[edit]

Iron Man's supporting characters include his personal assistant and love interest, Pepper Potts, his best friend and confidant, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, who also becomes the superhero War Machine, and his business rival, Obadiah Stane, who becomes the villain Iron Monger.

Enemies[edit]

Iron Man's rogues' gallery includes villains such as Mandarin, Whiplash, Crimson Dynamo, and Justin Hammer. These adversaries often challenge Stark both physically and intellectually.

Teams and Affiliations[edit]

Iron Man is a founding member of the Avengers, a team of superheroes that includes Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and others. He has also been a member of other groups such as the Illuminati and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

In Other Media[edit]

Iron Man has been adapted into various forms of media, including animated television series, video games, and live-action films. The character is portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Iron Man (2008).
