International Cannabinoid Research Society
The International Cannabinoid Research Society (ICRS) is a distinguished professional society dedicated to fostering scientific research across all areas related to cannabinoids, encompassing a wide range of disciplines such as biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology, and physiology, among others.
History
Founded in 1992, the ICRS has its roots in cannabinoid research symposia that date back to 1970, initiated by pioneering researchers in the field. From its inception with 50 founding members, the Society has grown to include nearly 500 members globally, demonstrating the expanding interest and recognition of cannabinoid research.
Mission
The ICRS is committed to advancing scientific discovery and knowledge about cannabinoids through:
- Promoting unbiased, non-political, and non-religious scientific research in all aspects of cannabinoids.
- Serving as a reputable source of information on the wide array of topics related to Cannabis and cannabinoids, including their chemistry, pharmacology, potential therapeutic uses, toxicology, and the behavioral, psychological, and social ramifications of Cannabis use.
- Encouraging open dialogue and exchange of research findings and perspectives among scientists by organizing scientific meetings and conferences.
The Society's primary objectives are to nurture cannabinoid research, facilitate the dissemination of scientific data and viewpoints on cannabinoids, and act as a reliable resource for scientific information on the endocannabinoid system and cannabinoid-related substances.
Awards
Each year, the ICRS honors outstanding contributions to cannabinoid research with the "Raphael Mechoulam Award in Cannabinoid Research," named after the renowned scientist who was pivotal in the identification and synthesis of THC, the principal psychoactive constituent of Cannabis.
Conferences
The ICRS organizes annual symposia known as the "ICRS Annual Symposium on the Cannabinoids," where researchers from around the world gather to present their latest findings, exchange ideas, and forge collaborations. These events are crucial for staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in cannabinoid science and for networking within the professional community.
Membership
Membership in the ICRS is open to researchers and academics who are actively involved in cannabinoid research or related fields. Members benefit from access to the Society's resources, including participation in the annual symposium, voting rights on matters concerning the Society, and opportunities to engage with a global network of cannabinoid researchers.
