Internal Organs

Internal organs, also known as viscera, are the organs located within the body cavities. They are essential for the body's survival and function. The main body cavities that house the internal organs are the thoracic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity.

Pronunciation: /ɪnˈtɜːrnl ˈɔːɡənz/

Etymology: The term 'internal' originates from the Latin word 'internus' meaning 'inside', and 'organ' comes from the Old English 'organ' which is derived from the Latin 'organum', meaning 'instrument'.

Thoracic Cavity

The thoracic cavity contains organs such as the heart, lungs, and esophagus.

  • Heart: The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body.
  • Lungs: The lungs are responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
  • Esophagus: The esophagus is a tube that connects the throat to the stomach, allowing for the passage of food.

Abdominal Cavity

The abdominal cavity contains organs such as the stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and intestines.

  • Stomach: The stomach is a muscular organ that breaks down food using acids and enzymes.
  • Liver: The liver is responsible for detoxifying chemicals and metabolizing drugs.
  • Gallbladder: The gallbladder stores bile, a substance produced by the liver to digest fats.
  • Pancreas: The pancreas produces insulin and other important enzymes and hormones that help break down foods.
  • Spleen: The spleen filters blood and helps the body fight infection.
  • Kidneys: The kidneys remove waste products from the blood and produce urine.
  • Intestines: The intestines absorb nutrients from food and move waste material out of the body.

Pelvic Cavity

The pelvic cavity contains organs such as the bladder, rectum, and in women, the uterus and ovaries.

  • Bladder: The bladder stores urine until it is excreted from the body.
  • Rectum: The rectum is the final section of the large intestine, terminating at the anus.
  • Uterus: The uterus is a female reproductive organ where a fertilized egg develops into a fetus.
  • Ovaries: The ovaries are a pair of female reproductive organs that produce eggs and hormones.
