Interleukin-9 receptor
Interleukin-9 receptor (also known as IL-9R) is a type of protein that in humans is encoded by the IL9R gene. The Interleukin-9 receptor is a cell surface receptor that binds to Interleukin-9 (IL-9), a cytokine involved in various biological processes.
Structure[edit]
The IL-9R is a glycoprotein that is found on the surface of lymphocytes and other immune cells. It is a member of the class I cytokine receptor family. The receptor is composed of an alpha chain (IL-9Rα) and a gamma chain (γc), which is shared with several other cytokine receptors.
Function[edit]
The primary function of the IL-9R is to bind to IL-9, leading to the activation of signal transduction pathways within the cell. This results in the activation of JAK-STAT and other signaling pathways, leading to the regulation of cell proliferation, cell differentiation, and immune response.
Clinical significance[edit]
Mutations in the IL9R gene have been associated with X-linked severe combined immunodeficiency (X-SCID), a rare genetic disorder characterized by a lack of functional T cells and NK cells. In addition, the IL-9/IL-9R pathway has been implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including asthma, allergy, and autoimmune diseases.
