Inter-American Driving Permit
Inter-American Driving Permit (IADP) is a document that allows individuals to operate motor vehicles in countries that recognize the permit, without the need for further tests or applications. It is issued by motoring organizations authorized by the respective governments of the countries that are signatories to the Inter-American Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Motor Vehicle Traffic of 1943.
Overview[edit]
The Inter-American Driving Permit is intended to overcome the difficulties drivers might encounter while traveling in countries where their domestic driver's license may not be recognized. The IADP is a non-governmental document that, when accompanied by a valid driver's license from the holder's home country, allows the holder to drive a private motor vehicle in another country.
Eligibility[edit]
To be eligible for an IADP, the applicant must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driver's license in their home country. The permit is valid for one year from the date of issue.
Application Process[edit]
The application process for an IADP involves submitting an application form, two passport-sized photographs, a photocopy of both sides of the driver's license, and the applicable fee to the issuing authority in the applicant's home country.
Recognized Countries[edit]
The IADP is recognized in all countries that are signatories to the Inter-American Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Motor Vehicle Traffic. This includes most countries in the Americas and some in the Caribbean.
Limitations[edit]
The IADP does not replace the need for a valid driver's license from the holder's home country, and it must be carried along with the domestic license. It also does not confer any driving privileges not granted by the domestic license, such as the ability to drive commercial vehicles if the domestic license does not allow it.
