Ilish

Ilish (/ɪˈlɪʃ/), also known as the hilsa herring or hilsa shad, is a species of fish related to the herring, in the Clupeidae family. It is a very popular and sought-after food fish in the Indian Subcontinent. The most famous hilsha fish comes from Chandpur District, Bangladesh. It is also a popular food fish in India, especially West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat.

Etymology

The word "Ilish" is derived from the Bengali word for hilsa, ইলিশ (ilish). The scientific name of the species is Tenualosa ilisha.

Description

Ilish is a silver-colored fish, typically measuring 30–35 cm in length, with a dorsal fin and a pointed head. It is known for its distinctive flavor and high oil content. The fish is usually consumed fried, baked, or as a pâté.
