Italian transplant surgeon and politician

Ignazio Marino (born 10 March 1955) is an Italian transplant surgeon and politician. He served as the Mayor of Rome from 2013 to 2015. Marino is a member of the Democratic Party.

Early life and education

Marino was born in Genoa, Italy. He graduated in medicine and surgery from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome. He later specialized in transplant surgery and hepatobiliary surgery.

Medical career

Marino began his medical career at the Transplantation Institute of the University of Pittsburgh, where he worked under the guidance of Thomas Starzl, a pioneer in liver transplantation. He has performed numerous organ transplants and has been involved in various medical research projects.

Political career

Marino entered politics as a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the Italian Senate in 2006 and served until 2013. During his tenure, he focused on healthcare policy and bioethics.

Mayor of Rome

In 2013, Marino was elected as the Mayor of Rome. His tenure was marked by efforts to improve the city's public transportation system and address issues related to urban decay. However, his administration faced several challenges, including allegations of financial mismanagement. Marino resigned from his position in October 2015.
