Ian McKellen

Sir Ian Murray McKellen (born 25 May 1939) is an English actor known for his work in theatre, film, and television. With a career spanning over six decades, McKellen is regarded as one of the greatest actors of his generation. He has received numerous awards, including a Tony Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

Early Life and Education

Ian McKellen was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Margery Lois (née Sutcliffe) and Denis Murray McKellen, a civil engineer. McKellen attended Bolton School, where he developed an interest in acting. He later studied at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, where he was a member of the Marlowe Society and performed in numerous plays.

Career

Theatre

McKellen's professional acting career began in 1961 at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry. He quickly became a prominent figure in British theatre, performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Some of his notable stage roles include Macbeth, King Lear, and Richard III.

Film

McKellen's film career includes a wide range of roles. He gained international fame for his portrayal of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies. He is also well-known for his role as Magneto in the X-Men series.

Television

McKellen has appeared in several television productions, including Coronation Street, Vicious, and The Prisoner. His television work has earned him critical acclaim and several award nominations.

Personal Life

McKellen is openly gay and has been a prominent advocate for LGBT rights. He came out in 1988 during a BBC Radio 3 interview, in response to the controversial Section 28 legislation. McKellen is a co-founder of Stonewall, an LGBT rights charity in the UK.

Honors and Awards

McKellen has been recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his career. He was knighted in 1991 for his services to the performing arts and was made a Companion of Honour in 2008.
