IL17RB

From Food & Medicine Encyclopedia

Interleukin-17 receptor B (IL17RB) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL17RB gene. This receptor is part of the interleukin-17 receptor family and plays a crucial role in the immune system by mediating the inflammatory response.

Function[edit]

IL17RB is primarily expressed in immune cells and is known to bind to interleukin-17E (also known as IL-25). This interaction is important for the activation of NF-kB and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The receptor is involved in the regulation of Th2 immune responses, which are critical in the defense against helminth infections and in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases.

Clinical Significance[edit]

Alterations in the expression of IL17RB have been associated with various inflammatory diseases and autoimmune disorders. Studies have shown that IL17RB may play a role in the development of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Additionally, IL17RB has been implicated in certain cancers, where it may influence tumor growth and metastasis.

Research[edit]

Ongoing research is focused on understanding the precise mechanisms by which IL17RB contributes to immune regulation and its potential as a therapeutic target. Inhibitors of IL17RB signaling are being explored as possible treatments for autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammatory conditions.
