IKZF2 (Ikaros family zinc finger 2) is a gene that encodes a protein belonging to the Ikaros family of transcription factors. This protein is also known as Helios and plays a crucial role in the regulation of lymphocyte development, particularly in T cells.

Function

The IKZF2 gene is involved in the regulation of gene expression during the development of the immune system. It is specifically expressed in hematopoietic cells and is essential for the proper functioning of T lymphocytes. Helios, the protein encoded by IKZF2, acts as a transcriptional regulator and is involved in the differentiation and proliferation of T cells.

Clinical Significance

Mutations or dysregulation of the IKZF2 gene have been associated with various immune disorders and cancers. For instance, alterations in IKZF2 expression have been observed in certain types of leukemia and lymphoma. Understanding the role of IKZF2 in these diseases could lead to the development of targeted therapies.

Research

Ongoing research is focused on elucidating the precise mechanisms by which IKZF2 regulates immune cell development and function. Studies are also investigating the potential of IKZF2 as a biomarker for certain hematological malignancies.
