Hystero contrast sonography
Hystero Contrast Sonography
Hystero Contrast Sonography (pronunciation: his-ter-o kon-trast so-nog-raphy) is a medical imaging procedure used to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes. The term originates from the Greek words "hystera" meaning womb, "kontrast" from the Latin "contra stare" meaning to stand against, and "sonography" from the Greek "sonos" meaning sound and "graphia" meaning writing.
Procedure
Hystero Contrast Sonography, also known as Sonohysterography or Saline infusion sonography, involves the injection of a sterile saline solution into the uterus via the cervix. This is followed by an ultrasound examination. The saline solution expands the uterine cavity, providing a clear and detailed view of the uterine walls and the fallopian tubes. This procedure is often used to diagnose conditions such as uterine fibroids, polyps, or adhesions.
Indications
Hystero Contrast Sonography is typically indicated for women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding, infertility, or recurrent miscarriage. It can also be used to assess the results of gynecological surgery or to locate an intrauterine device (IUD).
Risks and Complications
As with any medical procedure, Hystero Contrast Sonography carries some risks. These may include infection, allergic reaction to the saline solution, or discomfort during the procedure. However, serious complications are rare.
