History

Hermès was founded by Thierry Hermès in 1837 as a harness workshop in the Grands Boulevards quarter of Paris. Initially, the company produced harnesses and bridles for the carriage trade. Over time, Hermès expanded its product line to include saddlery and other equestrian goods.

In the early 20th century, under the leadership of Thierry's son, Charles-Émile Hermès, the company moved its workshops to 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, where it remains headquartered today. The company began to diversify its offerings, introducing its first leather handbags in the 1920s.
