hereditary cancer syndrome - (pronounced) (in-HAYR-ih-ted KAN-ser SIN-drome) A type of inherited disease in which the risk of certain types of cancer is higher than normal. Inherited cancer syndromes are caused by mutations (changes) in certain genes that are passed from parents to children. With hereditary cancer syndrome, certain cancer patterns can run within families. These patterns include having multiple close family members (such as a mother, daughter, and sister) with the same type of cancer, developing cancer at an early age, or developing two or more types of cancer in the same person. Examples of inherited cancer syndromes are hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, Cowden syndrome and Lynch syndrome. Also called familial cancer syndrome and hereditary cancer syndrome
