Henry B. Anthony

19th-century American politician and journalist
Henry Bowen Anthony (April 1, 1815 – September 2, 1884) was an American journalist and politician who served as the 21st Governor of Rhode Island and later as a United States Senator from Rhode Island. He was a member of the Whig Party before joining the Republican Party in 1856.
Early life and education[edit]
Henry B. Anthony was born in Coventry, Rhode Island, on April 1, 1815. He attended a local school before enrolling at Brown University, where he graduated in 1833. After completing his education, Anthony pursued a career in journalism.
Journalism career[edit]
Anthony became the editor of the Providence Journal in 1838. Under his leadership, the newspaper became one of the most influential publications in New England. He remained associated with the Providence Journal throughout his life, even while serving in political office.
Political career[edit]
Governor of Rhode Island[edit]
In 1849, Anthony was elected as the 21st Governor of Rhode Island. He served two terms from May 6, 1849, to May 4, 1851. During his tenure, he focused on improving the state's infrastructure and education system.
United States Senator[edit]
In 1859, Anthony was elected to the United States Senate, where he served until his death in 1884. As a senator, he was known for his moderate views and his efforts to promote unity during the American Civil War. He was a strong supporter of the Union and worked to ensure the passage of key legislation during the Reconstruction era.
Anthony served as the President pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1869 to 1873 and again from 1875 to 1883. He was also the chairman of the Senate Committee on Printing and the Senate Committee on Revolutionary Claims.
Death and legacy[edit]
Henry B. Anthony died on September 2, 1884, in Providence, Rhode Island. He was buried in the North Burial Ground in Providence. Anthony is remembered for his contributions to journalism and his long and distinguished career in public service.
