Journalist
A Journalist (/ˈdʒɜːrnəlɪst/; from French journaliste) is a person who collects, writes, or distributes news or other current information to the public. A journalist's work is called journalism.
Etymology
The term "journalist" comes from the French word journaliste, which is derived from the word journal, meaning "daily". The term was first used in English in the early 18th century.
Role
A journalist can work with general issues or specialize in certain issues. However, most journalists tend to specialize, and by cooperating with other journalists, produce journals that span many topics. Journalists include reporters, photojournalists, editorialists, columnists, and others.
Types of Journalists
- Investigative Journalist: An investigative journalist is a person who deeply investigates a single topic of interest, often involving crime, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing.
- Photojournalist: A photojournalist uses images to tell a news story. It is now usually understood to refer only to still images, but in some cases the term also refers to video used in broadcast journalism.
- Editorialist: An editorialist is a journalist who writes editorials, which are articles that provide a subjective viewpoint on current events.
- Columnist: A columnist is a journalist who writes for publication in a series, creating an article that usually offers commentary and opinions.
