Helen Caldicott (pronounced: HE-len CAL-di-cot) is an Australian physician, author, and anti-nuclear advocate who has dedicated her life to educating the public about the medical hazards of the nuclear age and the necessary changes in human behavior to stop environmental destruction.
Etymology
The name Helen is of Greek origin, meaning "shining light" or "the bright one". Caldicott is an English surname, originally derived from the place name Caldecote, meaning "cold cottage".
Biography
Helen Caldicott was born on August 7, 1938, in Melbourne, Australia. She graduated from the University of Adelaide Medical School in 1961. In the late 1970s, Caldicott became a leader in the Anti-nuclear movement in the United States through her role in reviving the organization Physicians for Social Responsibility. She also helped to found several other organizations dedicated to opposing the use of nuclear power, depleted uranium munitions, nuclear weapons, nuclear weapons proliferation, and military action in general.
