The University of Adelaide is a public research university located in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1874, it is the third-oldest university in Australia. The university's main campus is located on North Terrace in the Adelaide city centre, adjacent to the Art Gallery of South Australia, the South Australian Museum, and the State Library of South Australia.
History
The University of Adelaide was established on 6 November 1874 after a £20,000 donation by grazier and copper miner Walter Watson Hughes, along with support from Thomas Elder. The university was founded with the aim of providing higher education to the colony of South Australia and was the first university in Australia to admit women to academic courses on an equal basis with men.
Campuses
The University of Adelaide has four main campuses:
North Terrace
The main campus is located on North Terrace in the heart of Adelaide. It houses the majority of the university's faculties and is the site of the historic Bonython Hall.
Waite
The Waite Campus is located in Urrbrae, and is home to the Waite Research Institute, which focuses on agricultural science and plant biotechnology.
Roseworthy
The Roseworthy Campus is located north of Adelaide and is known for its focus on agricultural and animal sciences.
Thebarton
The Thebarton Campus is an industrial testing ground and research facility.
Academic Structure
The University of Adelaide is divided into five faculties, each containing constituent schools:
- Faculty of Arts
- Faculty of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences
- Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
- Faculty of the Professions
- Faculty of Sciences

- Julia Gillard, the 27th Prime Minister of Australia.
