Health food (/ˈhɛlθ fuːd/) is a term used to describe foods that are considered beneficial to health beyond a normal healthy diet required for human nutrition. Foods marketed as health foods may be part of one or more categories, such as natural foods, organic foods, whole foods, vegetarian foods or dietary supplements.
Etymology
The term "health food" has been used since the 1920s to refer to specific foods claimed to be especially beneficial to health, although the term has no official definition. Some terms that are associated with health food are based on types of diet, such as vegetarian or vegan diets, and are linked to specific health-related philosophies.
