Hawler Medical University

Hawler Medical University (pronunciation: /ˈhɑːlər ˈmɛdɪkəl juːˈnɪvɜːrsɪti/) is a university located in Erbil, the capital city of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It is named after the historical name of the city, Hawler.

Etymology

The term "Hawler" is the Kurdish pronunciation of Erbil, an ancient city in northern Iraq. The term "Medical University" signifies the institution's focus on medical education and research.

History

Hawler Medical University was established in 2005 as the first specialized medical university in Iraq. It was formed by merging the Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences, which were previously under the University of Salahaddin.
