Haverford, Pennsylvania

Haverford, Pennsylvania is a unincorporated community located in both Haverford Township in Delaware County, and Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It is located near the city of Philadelphia, and is part of the Philadelphia Main Line.

History

Haverford's name is derived from the town of Haverfordwest in Wales, UK. The community was primarily agricultural until after the American Civil War, when it became a resort area for wealthy Philadelphians. The Haverford Station was built in 1880 to accommodate these visitors.

Education

Haverford is home to Haverford College, a private, coeducational liberal arts college that is known for its rigorous academics. The Haverford School is a private, nonsectarian, all-boys college preparatory day school. The Haverford Friends School is a Quaker school for students in preschool through eighth grade.

Recreation

The Haverford Reserve is a community park that offers trails, athletic fields, and a playground. The Merion Cricket Club is a private club that offers cricket, squash, and tennis.

Transportation

Haverford is served by the SEPTA Paoli/Thorndale Line at the Haverford Station. It is also close to several major roads, including U.S. Route 30 and Pennsylvania Route 320.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in Haverford, including John B. Kelly Jr., an Olympic rower and brother of actress Grace Kelly, and Daniel Dae Kim, an actor known for his roles in television series such as Lost and Hawaii Five-0.
