Hamilton is situated in the geographic centre of the Golden Horseshoe, a densely populated and industrialized region in Southern Ontario.
History[edit]
Hamilton was incorporated as a city in 1846. However, its history dates back further, with documented records showing the area was inhabited by the Neutral Nation Native people as early as 2,000 BC. The city is named after George Hamilton, a settler who established a homestead in the area in 1815.
Geography[edit]
Hamilton is located on the western end of the Niagara Peninsula and wraps around the westernmost part of Lake Ontario. The city's diverse geography is marked by a mix of urban, suburban, and rural areas. The Niagara Escarpment, a large, naturally occurring ridge populated by a variety of flora and fauna, bisects the city.
Economy[edit]
Hamilton's economy is driven by manufacturing, with the steel industry being the most significant. The city is home to two of Canada's largest steel producers, Stelco and Dofasco. Other sectors contributing to the city's economy include health sciences, education, and services.
Culture[edit]
Hamilton is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, studios, and live music venues. The city hosts several annual cultural festivals, including the Hamilton Fringe Festival and Supercrawl. Hamilton is also home to the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Education[edit]
Hamilton is home to several post-secondary institutions, including McMaster University, one of Canada's top research universities, and Mohawk College, a comprehensive college serving the Greater Hamilton Area.
Transportation[edit]
Hamilton's transportation network includes a mix of roads, public transit, cycling infrastructure, and air travel. The city is served by the Hamilton Street Railway for public transit and John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport for air travel.
