HOXC4

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

HOXC4 is a gene that in humans encodes the homeobox protein HOXC4. It is a member of the homeobox family of genes that are critical for development and differentiation. The proteins encoded by these genes are transcription factors that can bind DNA and regulate the expression of other genes.

Function

The HOXC4 protein is a sequence-specific transcription factor that is part of the larger HOX family. These proteins play a key role in morphogenesis during embryonic development. They help to determine the anterior-posterior axis and segment identity in developing embryos by controlling the spatial patterning of cells.

Clinical significance

Mutations in the HOXC4 gene have been associated with several types of cancer, including leukemia and breast cancer. These mutations can lead to abnormal expression of the gene, which can contribute to the development and progression of cancer.

Structure

The HOXC4 gene is located on the long (q) arm of chromosome 12 at position 13. The gene spans approximately 26 kilobases and contains two exons. The encoded protein is 255 amino acids in length.

Expression

HOXC4 is expressed in a variety of tissues, including the brain, spinal cord, and lymphoid tissue. Its expression is regulated by a variety of factors, including hormones, growth factors, and cytokines.
