Guelph is a city located in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The area now known as Guelph was traditionally inhabited by the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. The city was founded on April 23, 1827, by John Galt, a Scottish novelist and the first superintendent of the Canada Company, a British land development company. Galt designed the town to attract settlers to it and to the surrounding countryside. Guelph's unique layout, with streets radiating from a focal point at the Speed River, was intended to mimic European city designs of the time.
