Grits
Grits (/ɡrɪts/) is a type of food made from a dish of boiled cornmeal. Hominy grits are a type of grits made from hominy – corn that has been treated with an alkali in a process called nixtamalization with the pericarp removed. Grits are often served with other flavorings as a breakfast dish, usually savory. It is popular in the Southern United States.
Etymology
The word "grits" is derived from the Old English word "grytt," which means a 'coarse meal'. It shares its origins with the German word "Grieß," Dutch "gort," and English "groats."
