Gregory Zilboorg was born into a Jewish family in Kiev. He studied at the University of Kiev and later at the University of Saint Petersburg, where he earned his medical degree. During his early years, he was involved in the Russian Revolution of 1917 and worked as a physician in the revolutionary government.

Emigration to the United States

In 1919, Zilboorg emigrated to the United States to escape the political turmoil in Russia. He settled in New York City, where he continued his medical practice and furthered his studies in psychiatry. He became a naturalized American citizen and established a successful private practice.

Contributions to Psychiatry

Zilboorg is best known for his work in the history of psychiatry. His book, A History of Medical Psychology (1941), is considered a seminal work in the field.
