Gopuff
Gopuff is an American digital delivery service operating in the United States. Founded in 2013 by Yakir Gola and Rafael Ilishayev, the company is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gopuff delivers items typically found in convenience stores such as snacks, drinks, household items, and over-the-counter medication.
History
Gopuff was founded in 2013 by Yakir Gola and Rafael Ilishayev while they were students at Drexel University. The idea for the company came from their own experiences as college students needing snacks and other items during late-night study sessions.
In 2014, Gopuff launched its first app, allowing customers to order items for delivery directly from their smartphones. The company initially operated only in Philadelphia, but quickly expanded to other cities across the United States.
Business Model
Gopuff operates by having local warehouses in the cities it serves, stocked with a variety of products. When a customer places an order, the items are picked and packed at the local warehouse and then delivered to the customer's location. This model allows Gopuff to control the entire delivery process, ensuring faster delivery times and lower costs compared to other delivery services that rely on third-party stores.
Funding and Growth
Gopuff has raised several rounds of funding to fuel its growth. In 2020, the company raised $380 million in a funding round led by Accel and D1 Capital Partners, valuing the company at $3.9 billion.
The company has used this funding to expand its service to over 500 cities across the United States, and to acquire other companies in the delivery space. In 2020, Gopuff acquired BevMo, a West Coast liquor store chain, for $350 million.
Criticism and Controversy
Gopuff has faced criticism for its treatment of workers, with some drivers claiming they are underpaid and overworked. The company has also been accused of violating local zoning laws in some cities where it operates.
