Google Cardboard is a virtual reality (VR) platform developed by Google for use with a head mount for a smartphone. Named for its fold-out cardboard viewer, the platform is intended as a low-cost system to encourage interest and development in VR applications. It was first announced at the Google I/O 2014 developers conference, where it was introduced as a simple and affordable way to experience VR.
Overview
Google Cardboard is designed to be a low-cost system that uses a fold-out cardboard viewer. The viewer is made from low-cost components and assembles into a basic VR headset. Users can place their smartphone into the back of the viewer and look through the lenses to experience VR content. The platform is compatible with both Android and iOS devices.
Components
The Google Cardboard viewer consists of the following components:
- A piece of cardboard, which forms the body of the viewer.
- Lenses, which provide the necessary optical adjustments.
- A magnet or capacitive tape, which acts as a button for interacting with the smartphone.
- A rubber band to hold the smartphone in place.
- Velcro strips to secure the viewer.
Applications
Google Cardboard supports a variety of VR applications, including games, educational content, and immersive experiences. Developers can create their own applications using the Google Cardboard SDK, which is available for both Android and iOS.
Discontinuation
Google discontinued the Google Cardboard hardware on March 3, 2021, but the software development kit (SDK) remains available for developers to create VR experiences.
