Golgi cell
Golgi Cell
Golgi cell (pronounced: /ˈgɒldʒi/), also known as Golgi interneuron, is a type of neuron or nerve cell found in the cerebellum, a part of the brain. The name is derived from the Italian physician and scientist Camillo Golgi, who first identified these cells.
Etymology
The term "Golgi cell" is named after Camillo Golgi, an Italian physician, pathologist, scientist, and Nobel laureate. He is recognized for his works in the central nervous system, leading to the discovery of the neuron or nerve cell that now bears his name.
Description
Golgi cells are inhibitory interneurons found in the granular layer of the cerebellum. They play a crucial role in processing information from the cerebellum to other parts of the brain. These cells are characterized by their "tangled" or "spidery" appearance, which is due to the extensive dendritic tree that extends from the cell body.
Function
The primary function of Golgi cells is to regulate the input of information into the cerebellar cortex. They receive information from various sources, including mossy fibers and parallel fibers, and send inhibitory signals to granule cells and unipolar brush cells. This inhibitory function helps to modulate and fine-tune the output signals of the cerebellum.
