Genetics of tuberculosis
Genetics of Tuberculosis
Genetics of Tuberculosis (pronunciation: /dʒɪˈnɛtɪks ɒv tʌbəˈkjuːləsɪs/) refers to the study of the genetic factors that influence the susceptibility and resistance to Tuberculosis (TB), a contagious disease primarily affecting the lungs.
Etymology
The term "Genetics" is derived from the Greek word "genetikos" meaning "genitive" and "genes" meaning "born". "Tuberculosis" is derived from the Latin word "tuberculum" meaning "small swelling" and the suffix "-osis" indicating "abnormal condition or disease".
Definition
Genetics of Tuberculosis involves the study of the genomic variations and mutations in the M. tuberculosis bacterium, as well as the host's genetic makeup that may influence the susceptibility to the disease.
Related Terms
- Genome: The complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism.
- Mutation: The changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations.
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis: The bacterium that causes Tuberculosis.
- Susceptibility: The state or fact of being likely or liable to be influenced or harmed by a particular thing.
- Resistance: The ability not to be affected by something, especially adversely.
Genetic Factors
Several genetic factors have been identified that influence the susceptibility to Tuberculosis. These include variations in the HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) complex, Interferon genes, and Toll-like receptor genes among others.
Research
Research in the field of Genetics of Tuberculosis aims to understand the genetic basis of susceptibility and resistance to the disease. This knowledge can be used to develop new diagnostic tools, treatments, and preventive strategies.
