Galvanization

Galvanization (pronounced: gal-vuh-ni-zay-shun) is a process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, to prevent rusting. The most common method is hot-dip galvanizing, in which the parts are submerged in a bath of molten zinc.

Etymology

The term galvanization is derived from the name of Italian scientist Luigi Galvani, who discovered the electrochemical process that occurs between metals during an experiment in the 19th century.

Process

Galvanization involves the use of chemical reactions to coat a layer of zinc onto the surface of a metal. This is typically done through a process known as hot-dip galvanizing, where the metal is submerged in a bath of molten zinc. The zinc then reacts with the metal to form a tightly-bonded alloy coating which protects the base metal from corrosion.
