Fudan University (Simplified Chinese: 复旦大学; Traditional Chinese: 復旦大學; Pinyin: Fùdàn Dàxué) is a major public university located in Shanghai, China. It is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious and selective universities in China. Established in 1905, Fudan University was originally known as Fudan Public School. Its name was suggested by the educator Ma Xiangbo, and it derives from a phrase in the Classic of History – Fùdàn Jìzhí (復旦繼志), which means "brilliant sunlight" or "renewal of the day".

History

The history of Fudan University can be traced back to the late Qing Dynasty when it was founded by Ma Xiangbo, SJ, in 1905. The university started as Fudan Public School with only a handful of students.
