Frontenac (grape)
Frontenac is a hybrid grape variety developed by the University of Minnesota for use in winemaking. It is known for its cold hardiness and disease resistance, making it particularly suitable for cultivation in colder climates.
History
Frontenac was released in 1996 by the University of Minnesota. It is a cross between the French hybrid Landot 4511 and a native Vitis riparia vine. The grape was named after Louis de Buade de Frontenac, a notable figure in Canadian history.
Characteristics
Frontenac grapes are small to medium in size and grow in tight clusters. The berries are dark blue to black in color. The vine is highly resistant to cold temperatures, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -30°F (-34°C). It also shows good resistance to common grape diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew.
Wine Profile
Frontenac is used to produce a variety of wines, including red, rosé, and dessert wines. The wines are typically high in acidity and have a deep color. Common flavor notes include cherry, plum, and berry, with some wines also exhibiting hints of spice and chocolate.
Cultivation
Frontenac is well-suited for cultivation in regions with harsh winters, such as the northern United States and Canada. It requires well-drained soil and benefits from regular pruning to manage its vigorous growth. The grape's disease resistance reduces the need for chemical treatments, making it a popular choice for sustainable and organic vineyards.
Related Varieties
The University of Minnesota has also developed other cold-hardy grape varieties, including Frontenac gris and Frontenac blanc, which are mutations of the original Frontenac grape.
