Francisco Franco (December 4, 1892 – November 20, 1975) was a Spanish military officer and dictator who ruled over Spain from 1939 until his death in 1975. Franco rose to power during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), a conflict that erupted after a coalition of Republicans, Socialists, and Anarchists made electoral gains, leading to a military rebellion.
