FoxNext
FoxNext was a division of 20th Century Fox, a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company, focused on the development and publishing of video games, virtual reality (VR) experiences, and theme park attractions. The division was established in 2017 and was headquartered in Los Angeles, California.
History
FoxNext was formed in January 2017, with the aim of expanding 20th Century Fox's presence in the interactive entertainment industry. The division was led by Salil Mehta, who previously served as the president of content management for 20th Century Fox.
In March 2018, FoxNext acquired Cold Iron Studios, a game development studio known for its work on massively multiplayer online games (MMOs). This acquisition was part of FoxNext's strategy to develop high-quality games based on popular Fox franchises.
Key Projects
FoxNext was involved in several notable projects, including:
- Marvel Strike Force: A mobile role-playing game (RPG) developed by FoxNext Games, featuring characters from the Marvel Universe.
- Alien: Blackout: A mobile survival horror game set in the Alien universe.
- The Simpsons VR Experience: A virtual reality experience based on the popular animated series The Simpsons.
Acquisition by Disney
In March 2019, The Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which included FoxNext. Following the acquisition, Disney began to integrate FoxNext's operations into its own interactive entertainment division.
In January 2020, it was announced that FoxNext would be sold to Scopely, a mobile game developer and publisher. The sale included the transfer of FoxNext Games and Cold Iron Studios to Scopely.
Closure
In August 2020, Scopely announced that it would be shutting down FoxNext Games, with the remaining projects being absorbed into Scopely's existing operations. Cold Iron Studios was later sold to Daybreak Game Company.
Legacy
Despite its relatively short existence, FoxNext made a significant impact on the interactive entertainment industry, particularly through its development of popular mobile games and VR experiences.
