Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development
Foundation for Women's Health, Research and Development (FORWARD) is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) that focuses on gender equality, women's health, and particularly on the issues of female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and other forms of violence against women and girls. FORWARD was established in the United Kingdom in the early 1980s by a group of African women who aimed to address the health and human rights challenges faced by African women and girls, both within the continent and in the diaspora.
Mission and Objectives
The primary mission of FORWARD is to advance and protect the physical, mental, and socio-economic health of African women and girls. FORWARD works to achieve its mission through advocacy, community engagement, education programs, and partnerships with local organizations in Africa and beyond. The organization's objectives include:
- Raising awareness about the harmful practices of FGM, child marriage, and other forms of violence against women and girls.
- Empowering women and girls to lead change in their communities.
- Influencing policies at local, national, and international levels to protect the rights of women and girls.
- Providing support and resources to survivors of harmful practices.
Programs and Activities
FORWARD's programs and activities are diverse and tailored to address the specific needs of the communities they serve. These include:
- Education and Training: FORWARD conducts workshops, seminars, and training sessions for community leaders, healthcare professionals, and educators on the health risks and human rights implications of FGM and child marriage.
- Advocacy and Policy Work: The organization works with policymakers, governments, and international bodies to advocate for laws and policies that protect women and girls from violence and discrimination.
- Community Engagement: FORWARD engages with communities through dialogue and participatory approaches to challenge and change social norms and practices that harm women and girls.
- Support for Survivors: FORWARD provides psychological, medical, and legal support for survivors of FGM, child marriage, and other forms of violence.
Impact and Recognition
FORWARD has been recognized for its impactful work in the field of women's health and rights. The organization has contributed to increased awareness and understanding of FGM and child marriage, leading to policy changes and the implementation of prevention programs in several countries. FORWARD's efforts have also empowered countless women and girls to become advocates for change in their own communities.
Challenges and Controversies
Despite its achievements, FORWARD faces challenges such as cultural resistance, limited resources, and the politicization of women's health issues. The organization navigates these challenges by working closely with communities and emphasizing culturally sensitive approaches to advocacy and education.
