Flunitazene

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Flunitrazepam is a benzodiazepine derivative drug that is commonly known as a potent hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic, and skeletal muscle relaxant drug. It is marketed under various trade names worldwide, including Rohypnol, Flunipam, and Hypnodorm, among others.

Pharmacology

Flunitrazepam is a benzodiazepine agonist, which means it enhances the effect of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA_A receptor, resulting in sedative, sleep-inducing, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties.

Medical Uses

Flunitrazepam is primarily used for the short-term treatment of insomnia. It is also used as a premedication for surgical procedures to induce sleepiness, reduce anxiety, and impair memory to prevent recall of the procedure.

Side Effects

Common side effects of flunitrazepam include drowsiness, impaired coordination, dizziness, and confusion. Long-term use can result in tolerance, physical dependence, and withdrawal syndrome. It may also cause paradoxical effects like increased anxiety, agitation, and hallucinations.

Legal Status

In many countries, flunitrazepam is a controlled substance, meaning its use is restricted due to its potential for abuse and addiction. In the United States, it is a Schedule IV controlled substance under the Controlled Substances Act.
