Fianna Fáil (Fianna Fáil – The Republican Party) is a political party in Ireland. Founded by Éamon de Valera in 1926, it has been one of the two dominant parties in Irish politics, along with Fine Gael. Fianna Fáil is traditionally associated with Irish nationalism and republicanism, and it has played a significant role in the political history of Ireland.
History
Fianna Fáil was established in 1926 by Éamon de Valera and his supporters, who split from Sinn Féin due to disagreements over the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The party's name, which means "Soldiers of Destiny," reflects its commitment to the establishment of an independent Irish republic.
In the early years, Fianna Fáil positioned itself as a party of the people, advocating for social and economic reforms. It first came to power in 1932 and has since been in government for several periods, often leading coalition governments.
Ideology
Fianna Fáil's ideology is a blend of Irish nationalism, liberal conservatism, and Christian democracy. The party supports a mixed economy, social justice, and the promotion of Irish culture and language. It has traditionally been seen as a centrist to centre-right party.
Organisation
The party is organised at both national and local levels. Its youth wing, Ógra Fianna Fáil, plays a significant role in engaging younger members. The party's headquarters are located at 65-66 Lower Mount Street, Dublin.
Electoral Performance
Fianna Fáil has been one of the most successful political parties in Ireland, frequently securing a significant number of seats in the Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann. The party has also been influential in local government.
Leaders
Fianna Fáil has been led by several prominent figures, including its founder Éamon de Valera, Seán Lemass, Jack Lynch, Charles Haughey, Albert Reynolds, Bertie Ahern, and the current leader, Micheál Martin.
