Fahrenheit (F)

Fahrenheit (pronounced: /ˈfærənˌhaɪt/) is a temperature scale used primarily in the United States and its territories. It was proposed in 1724 by the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, after whom it is named.

Etymology

The term "Fahrenheit" is derived from the surname of Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit, who first proposed this temperature scale. The German physicist was born in the Polish city of Gdańsk, and the word "Fahrenheit" is of German origin.

Definition

On the Fahrenheit scale, the freezing point of water is 32 degrees, and the boiling point is 212 degrees at standard atmospheric pressure. This puts the boiling and freezing points of water exactly 180 degrees apart, a feature that Fahrenheit felt was the most natural way of defining a temperature scale.
