Face Mask

A Face Mask (pronunciation: /feɪs mɑːsk/) is a protective device used to cover the mouth and nose or the entire face to guard the wearer against dust, smoke, splashes, sprays, and other harmful particles or droplets in the environment.

Etymology

The term "Face Mask" is derived from the English words "face" and "mask". The word "face" comes from the Old English 'fæs', meaning front or countenance, while "mask" originates from the French 'masque', which in turn is derived from the Italian 'maschera', meaning a covering to hide or guard the face.

Types of Face Masks

There are several types of face masks, each designed for specific purposes and environments. Some of the most common types include:

  • Surgical mask: A loose-fitting, disposable mask that protects the wearer's nose and mouth from contact with droplets, splashes, and sprays that may contain germs.
  • N95 respirator: A respiratory protective device designed to achieve a very close facial fit and very efficient filtration of airborne particles.
  • Cloth mask: A mask made from common textiles, usually cotton, worn over the mouth and nose. Unlike surgical masks and respirators, they are washable and reusable.

Usage

Face masks are used in various fields, including healthcare, construction, and personal protection against airborne diseases. They are also commonly used in certain cultural and religious ceremonies.

Related Terms

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.
  • Respirator: A device designed to protect the wearer from inhaling hazardous atmospheres.
  • Filter: A porous device for removing impurities or solid particles from a liquid or gas passed through it.
