European Vaccine Initiative

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

European Vaccine Initiative (EVI) is a leading non-profit organization that supports the development of effective, accessible, and affordable vaccines against diseases of poverty. Established in 1998, EVI has been instrumental in the global fight against diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS.

History

The European Vaccine Initiative was initially established as the European Malaria Vaccine Initiative (EMVI). Its primary focus was to address the urgent need for a malaria vaccine. In 2009, the organization expanded its scope to include other diseases of poverty and was renamed the European Vaccine Initiative.

Mission and Objectives

EVI's mission is to develop effective, safe, and affordable vaccines against diseases of poverty. The organization aims to facilitate the development and testing of vaccine candidates, promote knowledge exchange and capacity building, and advocate for increased investment in vaccine research and development.

Projects and Achievements

EVI has been involved in several successful projects, including the development of the RTS,S malaria vaccine, which is the first and, to date, the only licensed vaccine against malaria. EVI also supports the development of vaccines against other diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS.

Partnerships

EVI collaborates with a wide range of partners, including research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, non-governmental organizations, and government agencies. These partnerships are crucial for the successful development and delivery of vaccines.

Funding

EVI is primarily funded by the European Commission and other public and private donors. The funding is used to support vaccine research and development projects, capacity building activities, and advocacy efforts.
