Ethinylestriol

Ethinylestriol (pronounced: eh-thin-ill-est-ree-ol) is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen that was never marketed. It is a derivative of estradiol, and was discovered in 1938.

Etymology

The term "Ethinylestriol" is derived from the words "ethinyl", a chemical compound, and "estriol", a type of estrogen. The "ethinyl" part of the name refers to the ethinyl group (C2H3) that is attached to the estrogen molecule.
