Estradiol cypionate

Estradiol cypionate (pronunciation: es-tra-DYE-ol sip-EYE-oh-nate) is a steroid and estrogen hormone used in hormone therapy for menopausal symptom treatment and in transgender hormone therapy. It is also used in veterinary medicine.

Etymology

The term "estradiol" is derived from estra-, which is a prefix that refers to estrus, and -diol, a chemical term and suffix indicating that the compound contains two alcohol groups. The term "cypionate" refers to the cypionic acid from which the ester is derived.

Usage

Estradiol cypionate is used in the treatment of symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, burning, and irritation. It is also used to prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women and to replace estrogen in women with ovarian failure or other conditions that cause a lack of natural estrogen in the body. In transgender hormone therapy, it is used as a component of feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women.

Pharmacology

Estradiol cypionate is a prodrug of estradiol, the primary female sex hormone. It is an estrogen ester, specifically, an ester of estradiol with cypionic acid. The medication is provided in the form of an oil solution for intramuscular injection.
